A New Step in Global Ranking: KTI’s Position in the Transparent Ranking (July 2026 Edition)
The Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), has officially released the July 2026 edition of the Transparent Ranking of Universities. This edition positions higher education institutions worldwide based on the scholarly impact of their research output.
Kurdistan Technical Institute (KTI) Standing:
Out of 33 evaluated institutions in the Kurdistan Region (comprising 15 public and 18 private institutions), Kurdistan Technical Institute has achieved the following positions:
• 23rd in the Kurdistan Region.
• 69th in Iraq.
• 7068th globally.
• KTI registered 9 papers in the world’s Top 1% most-cited category and 41 papers in the Top 10% category within the OpenAlex database for the 2021–2025 period.
Continuity in the Rankings:Notably, in previous years, Kurdistan Technical Institute was the only technical institute from the region featured in this ranking. For this year, KTI and Raparin Technical and Vocational Institute (RTVI)—both affiliated with Maya Company.
For a young private technical institute compared alongside long-established universities, these results indicate steady development in research capacity, the scholarly impact of academic output, and the effectiveness of institutional support for academic research.
Updated Methodology:This edition introduces a fundamental shift in methodology: the ranking no longer utilizes Google Scholar profiles. Instead, data was harvested during the first week of July 2026 directly from the OpenAlexopen science platform, using official Research Organization Registry (ROR) institutional identifiers. This edition covers nearly 17,400 higher education institutions globally.
The criteria for the 2021–2025 period are structured as follows:
• Primary Criterion: The number of affiliated papers within the world’s Top 1% most-cited category (Top 1% Most Cited Papers).
• Secondary Criterion: In the event of a tie, the number of papers in the Top 10% most-cited category (Top 10% Most Cited Papers) is used as the tie-breaking metric.
• (Note: This dataset is independent and is NOT used in the compilation of the main Webometrics ranking).
We congratulate the faculty, researchers, and academic staff of KTI for their contribution to this progress.
